The story
Officers Jacob Clark, 25, and Jacob Wells, 40, were shot on May 31 during a response to a domestic disturbance call in the 12900 block of Gumfork Place. Clark was shot seven times and Wells was shot twice when the suspect, Gary G. Shaw, 65, fired on them as they entered the home. The call came from Shaw's mother, who had locked herself in an upstairs bedroom. Both officers were hospitalized in critical but stable condition and were discharged by early July to continue their recovery at home with their families.
Sgt. Landon Lee organized the August 25 golf tournament at Highlands Golf Course to help reduce financial burdens for the officers and their families as they heal. "When something like this happens, everyone wants to try to find a way to help," Lee said. All 28 teams registered for the tournament filled within three days of announcement. Additional participants can join as platinum sponsors. Those interested in participating or donating can contact Sgt. Lee at landonlee591@gmail.com.
The May 31 incident also resulted in the death of police K-9 Knight. The suspect, Gary Shaw, was wounded and arrested, facing 17 felony charges including two counts of attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer.
