The story
A 19-year-old suspect in a shooting at Virginia State University that wounded five people early Saturday was arraigned Monday morning in Chesterfield County court. Camron Harris of Henrico, who is not a student at the university, appeared virtually from the Chesterfield County Jail.
Harris faces eight felony charges: four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. His attorney, Sara Gaborik, said during the hearing that she wants to gather more information before seeking bond at a later date. Harris is currently being held without bond.
The shooting occurred around 1:28 a.m. Saturday at the Quad Annexes, near student dormitories at the campus on Boisseau Street. Five people, ranging in age from 17 to 23, were injured. Four of the wounded were not VSU students. One victim, a 20-year-old student, has been released from the hospital. Another victim remained in critical condition as of the arraignment.
Harris was arrested Saturday after police found him hiding in a dormitory closet on campus. Police also obtained eight felony warrants in connection with the incident.
According to authorities, multiple suspects may be involved in the shooting, and police said they are continuing to search for additional suspects. Harris's preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 1.
