Federal Funds to Build Sidewalk and Crossing on Route 1

The story

Chesterfield County is advancing a pedestrian safety project along Route 1 that will construct a new sidewalk and add pedestrian crossing infrastructure to improve foot traffic access and safety in the area.

The project will build a sidewalk along Route 1 from Whitehouse Road to Harrowgate Road. A pedestrian crossing will be installed at the intersection of Route 1 and Harrowgate Road, where a traffic signal already exists.

Federal funds will finance the construction. Preliminary engineering work is currently underway, with construction expected to begin in 2030. During construction, the county plans to use daily lane and shoulder closures during off-peak hours as needed to minimize traffic disruption.
