The story

A pedestrian crosswalk study at the intersection of Spring Run Road and Alysheba Lane, conducted in late January, has received approval from the Virginia Department of Transportation. VDOT signed off on the project in late June, recommending installation of a crosswalk on the western side of the intersection equipped with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) to improve driver awareness and pedestrian safety.

The next phase involves Chesterfield County obtaining a VDOT Land Use Permit before construction can proceed. The safety features will include RRFB devices, which emit rapidly flashing yellow LED lights activated by pedestrians to alert approaching drivers. Research by the Federal Highway Administration has found that crosswalks equipped with RRFBs can reduce pedestrian crashes by as much as 47 percent.

For questions about the project, residents can contact Hong Lim at the Chesterfield County Department of Transportation at 804-748-1037 or limh@chesterfield.gov.
