The story

The Virginia Department of Transportation is planning a $8.4 million bridge replacement project on Hopkins Road over Falling Creek in Chesterfield County. The project will replace the existing single-span bridge with a new single-span concrete box-beam bridge and widen the approaching roadway to meet the width of the new structure.

A design public hearing was held on February 12, 2026, at Falling Creek Elementary School, where VDOT presented the project plans to the public. The project is currently in the design phase, with advertisement scheduled for fall 2027, contract award in winter 2027, construction start in early 2028, and completion targeted for fall 2029.

When construction begins, Hopkins Road will be closed completely, requiring traffic to be diverted via Route 150 (Chippenham Parkway), Route 10 (Iron Bridge Road/Broad Rock Boulevard), and Route 647 (Walmsley Boulevard). VDOT has committed to implementing dust control, siltation, and erosion management measures during construction and will coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies on environmental compliance under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
