The story
Chesterfield County voters will go to the polls Tuesday, August 4, 2026, for primary elections that will determine Democratic and Republican nominees for U.S. House and Senate races, as well as a special Democratic primary for a local county board seat. That county contest picks a nominee; the special election that fills the seat is in November. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Democratic primary in Virginia's 1st Congressional District, which covers Chesterfield, Henrico, Williamsburg, and western Chesapeake Bay communities, features seven candidates. The leading contenders include Shannon Taylor, a prosecutor and the Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney; Salaam Bhatti, an attorney; and Jason Knapp, a former U.S. Navy fighter pilot and national security official. Other candidates running include Tim Cywinski, a communications director; Andrew Lucchetti, an attorney; and James Shea, a high school economics teacher. The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican incumbent Rob Wittman in the November general election, with forecasters rating the seat as Lean Republican.
Chesterfield County Democratic voters will also participate in a special primary for the Board of Supervisors Dale District seat. The two candidates are LeQuan M. Hylton, who was appointed interim supervisor in 2025 and previously served as the district's planning commissioner, and Kathryn M. Crosby, a longtime Dale District resident. The seat became vacant after the death of Jim Holland in fall 2025. Both Hylton and Crosby own small businesses: Hylton operates a property management company while Crosby runs a consultancy. Hylton is also an Army Reserve officer and Afghanistan veteran.
Voters who wish to cast ballots early can do so at Central Library through Saturday, August 1. Early voting hours are Monday through Friday, June 18 through July 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays July 25 and August 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library also held extended Sunday hours on July 19 and July 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The registration deadline to register to vote, update an existing registration, or request an absentee ballot by mail is Friday, July 24. Voters can confirm their personalized ballot at vote.elections.virginia.gov or contact the Chesterfield County General Registrar at 804-748-1471 for assistance.
