The story

Gary G. Shaw, 65, was denied bond Wednesday morning following a hearing in which body camera evidence was presented to the judge. Shaw is accused of shooting two Chesterfield County police officers and killing a police K-9 during a domestic dispute on May 31 at 12900 Gumfork Place.

Shaw's mother called 911 around 4:40 p.m. that day to report her son had fired shots inside their shared home. When officers arrived, Shaw was armed with a long gun and a firearm in his waistband and threatened to shoot his mother if she went downstairs. Officers Jacob Clark and Jacob Wells made immediate entry and came under fire, sparking a 35-minute gunfight. Clark sustained seven gunshot wounds and Wells was shot twice. Both required surgery and are reported to have recovered. K-9 Knight, a 5-year-old German Shepherd and Malinois mix assigned to the Chesterfield County Police Department, was killed during the encounter. Shaw was wounded and arrested after surrendering; he appeared in a wheelchair at Wednesday's bond hearing.

Shaw faces 17 felony charges including two counts of attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer, two counts of aggravated malicious wounding, killing a police dog, and four counts of firearm use in felony commission. Eight additional charges were added to the case during a June court appearance.

Investigators recovered a substantial arsenal from Shaw's home and a detached garage, including two rifles converted to fully automatic weapons, AK rifle parts and conversion manuals, tens of thousands of cartridges, body armor, live gas grenades, pineapple grenades, and heavy machinery used for modifying firearms. Police also seized additional weapons from Shaw's son's residence after he posted concerning messages on Facebook, including statements about seeing his father and videos displaying roughly a dozen firearms.

Shaw's preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 16.
