The story

Chesterfield Parks & Recreation is hosting a free, immersive history event at Historic Point of Rocks that invites residents to explore the Civil War era through two significant local sites: the Strachan House and the Point of Rocks Hospital Site.

Point of Rocks holds major Civil War significance for Chesterfield County and the nation. From May 1864 until April 1865, the site housed a large federal hospital serving wounded troops from the Bermuda Hundred Campaign and the Siege of Petersburg. The Strachan House, built in 1841 by Rev. John Alexander Strachan, served as the surgeon's quarters during the occupation. The hospital complex, which began as tents in the surrounding orchard, expanded to hold several thousand patients at its peak. Among the medical personnel who served there was Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, who worked as superintendent of nurses.

The site also marks an important presidential moment: on March 27, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Point of Rocks Hospital accompanied by General Ulysses S. Grant and their wives to visit wounded Union soldiers. After the war ended, Rev. Strachan reclaimed his property and lived there until his death. In 2013, his descendants sold the property to Chesterfield County. Today, the historic site is part of R. Garland Dodd Park, a 176-acre county park that preserves the location for public access and education.

The immersive history event is designed to help community members connect directly with Chesterfield's heritage during this pivotal period in American history.
