The story
A 23-year-old Chesterfield County woman was killed early Thursday morning when her vehicle collided head-on with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 295 in Henrico County. The crash occurred at approximately 2:27 a.m. on July 9 near the 28-mile marker, in the area of Route 60.
Skylar Mackenzie Vargo of South Chesterfield was driving a Hyundai southbound in the northbound lanes of I-295 when the collision took place. The impact was severe enough to force the tractor-trailer across the median into the southbound lanes. Vargo's vehicle caught fire following the crash, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.
Emergency responders, including hazardous materials crews, responded to address fuel leakage from the tractor-trailer, which was carrying diesel fuel and oil. Multiple lanes of I-295 remained closed for several hours while crews removed the damaged vehicles, cleaned the roadway, and completed their investigation.
