The story

Chesterfield County Police received a call shortly before 7 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, reporting a woman in her 70s in crisis who had left her home carrying a loaded handgun. Police Chief Frank Carpenter said authorities found something written on paper at her home but declined to disclose details about her intentions.

Officers searched the area around the woman's residence, which sits next to Pocahontas State Park, for approximately two hours. According to Chief Carpenter, around 9:15 a.m., the woman emerged from the wood line approximately 40 feet from officers and was observed with the handgun. "The subject emerged from the wood line. Weapon was observed and weapons were discharged at that time," Carpenter said.

The woman was fatally struck. Officers immediately began lifesaving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Both officers were placed on administrative leave. Chief Carpenter stated that "both officers are on critical leave incident, which means more than likely both fired their weapon," though the investigation has not yet determined whether both officers discharged their weapons or how many total shots were fired.

Both officers had received specialized crisis intervention training and "responded to the scene in hopes of de-escalating the situation," according to Carpenter. The officers were equipped with body cameras that were activated during the encounter, though footage will not be released publicly.

No officers were injured. The circumstances of the incident, including whether the woman made threatening movements or discharged her weapon, remain under investigation.
