The story
Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation will host its Fourth of July celebration Saturday at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds with an expected attendance of approximately 12,000 people, a significant increase from previous years. The free event runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., with gates opening one hour later than originally planned due to extreme heat conditions in the region.
Entertainment will include The KOS Band, an eleven-piece group performing at 6 p.m. and again after the National Anthem, with a DJ providing music between performances. The Dixieland Express jazz ensemble will greet visitors at the main entrance with patriotic selections. A kids zone, open from 5 to 8:30 p.m., features bounce houses, gaming trucks, roaming entertainers, and glitter tattoos. Seventeen food vendors will offer various meal options. Fireworks will begin at dark.
To commemorate America's 250th anniversary, the county is incorporating special tributes, living history displays, reenactments, and patriotic music throughout the celebration. Attendees may bring blankets, chairs, and coolers with unopened bottled water, but alcohol, glass bottles, personal fireworks, tents, and canopies are prohibited. Only service animals are permitted.
Given the extreme heat forecast for the region, county officials have implemented multiple safety measures. The county will provide 9,000 water bottles, three misting tents, two cooling stations, and misting fans throughout the fairgrounds. Water stations will be placed along Government Center Parkway and Courthouse Road, with iced coolers and cloths available. Meadowdale Library will open Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. as an air-conditioned refuge, and splash pads at Beulah Recreation Center and River City Sportsplex will remain open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Medical personnel will be on-site during the event.
Emergency Management Coordinator Jess Winter emphasized the seriousness of the heat conditions, urging residents to monitor pets, check on neighbors, and stay hydrated with electrolytes while wearing protective clothing and sunblock. Attendees can also text CFIELD4TH to 888777 for emergency alerts during the event. Parking is available at L.C. Bird High School, Career and Technical Center, O.B. Gates Elementary School, and additional overflow parking at Government Complex Parkway, with accessible parking for valid handicapped placards at L.C. Bird.
