The story
Chesterfield County Fire and EMS held the fifth annual Ty Day on June 27, bringing together family members, friends, and colleagues to commemorate TyVaughn Eldridge, a 26-year-old firefighter recruit who died on July 3, 2021. Eldridge collapsed during a routine two-mile training run on July 1, 2021, falling approximately 16 minutes into the exercise. He died three days later from heat exhaustion, or hyperthermia, suffered during the training event.
Eldridge's legacy has become deeply woven into the department's culture since his death. Each new recruit class now honors him with a memorial run, and an award bearing his name is presented to one graduating firefighter at each academy completion ceremony. In August 2024, Eldridge's name was added to the Commonwealth Public Safety Memorial in Richmond, joining other first responders who have died in the line of duty while serving Virginia.
At the time of his death, investigators from the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry found that all safety protocols had been followed during the training exercise, and outdoor conditions were rated at level "green," the safest category in terms of heat and humidity. An investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined his death was accidental. Eldridge had graduated from Old Dominion University in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice before beginning his career in public safety.
Ty Day has become an annual occasion for the Chesterfield fire service and community to pause and remember Eldridge's commitment to public safety, celebrating both his memory and the department's continued dedication to honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
